Nuestro segundo episodio de 2023 presenta al Rev. Dr. Neddy Astudillo en una poderosa conversación con Rosa del Valle Araoz de Machaco (miembro de la Asociación Benditos Los Pobres) y Alirio Cáceres Aguirre (líder, Movimiento Ladauto Si, Red Eclesial Panamericana).
Ellas discuten: "Litio, Fe y Justicia Climática. ¿Qué es una Transición Justa desde la perspectiva de las comunidades religiosas en el Sur Global donde se extrae el Litio?"
Las computadoras, los teléfonos y la tecnología limpia dependen del litio y otros minerales. Producirlos requiere una minería extremadamente destructiva, que está perpetuando los atroces abusos ambientales, culturales, económicos y sociales del Norte Global en el Sur Global. ¿Qué es lo correcto? ¿Cómo deberían responder las personas de Fe?

RDO. DR. NEDDY ASTUDILLO (Anfitriona). Eco-teólogo venezolano y pastor presbiteriano radicado en EE.UU.; co-fundador, Angelic Organics Learning Center; coordinadora del programa de Español Justicia Climática y Fe en el Seminario Teológico Luterano del Pacífico. El Rev. Dr. Astudillo fue recientemente editor invitado de nuestra colección Eco-Teologîa. Actualmente enseña en todo el continente americano y se publica ampliamente. Es coautora de la histórica declaración del Consejo Nacional de Iglesias, La tierra de Dios es sagrada, y del libro, La tierra de Dios es sagrada.
ROSA DEL VALLE ARÁOZ DE MACHADO. En sus propias palabras, “Aráoz es el apellido de mi padre (el de mi madre desapareció en los registros oficiales de identidad de las personas). Y Machado es el apellido de Lacho, mi compañero de vida, con quien sigo transitando este camino de encuentro y transformación. esa es nuestra existencia. Nací en 1950, a los 15 años me enamoré, y en 1970 tuvimos al primero de nuestros siete hijos, cinco niños y dos niñas. Mi segundo nombre es "del Valle", y efectivamente , nacimos y crecimos en un valle, con el abrazo de los cerros, de esas magníficas y prodigiosas fuentes de agua que nos permiten vivir, soy parte del Territorio habitado desde la antigüedad por el pueblo Diaguitas, y que oficialmente la historia llama Catamarca, en el noroeste de la República Argentina. También formo parte de las Comunidades Eclesiales de Base, de la asociación Be. Pe., "Bienaventurados los Pobres", y, en representación de estos espacios territoriales, soy parte de la Comunidad Eco-espiritual de la Red Iglesias y Minería."

Actualmente trabaja como Campaña de Incidencia Hispanoamericana del Movimiento Laudato Si'. Asesor de la Red Eclesial Panamazónica, REPAM y de la Red Eclesial Ecológica Mesoamericana, REMAM. Miembro de varios equipos de Ecología Integral de la Iglesia Católica en América Latina y el Caribe.

Our second episode of 2023 features Rev. Dr. Neddy Astudillo in a powerful conversation with Rosa del Valle Araoz de Machaco (member, Blessed Be the Poor Association) and Alirio Cáceres Aguirre (leader, Ladauto Si Movement). They discuss:
"Lithium, Faith & Climate Justice. What is a Just Transition from the perspective of faith communities in the Global South where Lithium is being extracted?”
Computers and Clean Tech depend lithium and other minerals. To produce them requires extremely destructive mining, which is perpetuating the Global North's egregious environmental, cultural, economic, and social abuses in the Global South. What is the right thing to do? How should people of Faith respond?
This is a deeply articulate, well-rounded and inspiring conversation led by Rev. Astudillo with perspectives from Argentina, Colombia, and the USA. "There is much talk about green energy as the miraculous solution to stop carbon emissions, but let's think about where the minerals come from." This conversation explores "circular faith" and this complex issue and offers real, actionable solutions.

REV. DR. NEDDY ASTUDILLO (Host). A Venezuelan eco-theologian and Presbyterian pastor based in the US; co-founder, Angelic Organics Learning Center; coordinator of the Climate Justice and FaithSpanish program at Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Rev. Dr. Astudillo was recently guest editor of our collection, Eco-Teologîa. She currently teaches across the Americas and is published widely. She is a co-author of the historic National Council of Churches' declaration, God’s Earth is Sacred, and the book, God’s Earth is Sacred.
ROSA DEL VALLE ARÁOZ DE MACHADO. In her own words, "Aráoz is my father's last name (my mother's disappeared in the official records of people's identity). And Machado is the last name of Lacho, my life partner, with whom I continue to walk this path of encounter and transformation that is our existence. I was born in 1950, at the age of 15 I fell in love, and in 1970 we had the first of our seven children, five boys and two girls. My middle name is "del Valle", and indeed, we were born and grew up in a valley, with the embrace of the hills, of those magnificent and prodigious sources of water that allow us to live. I am part of the Territory inhabited since ancient times by the Diaguitas people, and which official history calls Catamarca, in the northwest of the Argentine Republic. I am also part of Base Ecclesial Communities, of the association Be. Pe., "Bienaventurados los Pobres” (Blessed be the Poor), and, representing these territorial spaces, I am part of the Eco-spiritual Community of the Red Iglesias y Minería (Churches and Mining Network)."

Currently works as Hispanoamerica's Advocacy Campaigner of the Laudato Si' Movement. Advisor to the Pan-Amazonian Ecclesial Network, REPAM and the Mesoamerican Ecological Ecclesial Network, REMAM.
